1. LA TOMATINA
A tomato fight is arranged every year in spain in which roughly around 30,000 people participate , and 120 tonnes of tomatoes are used as ammunation.
And 5 tomato rockets are exploded in the air to mark the beginning of the fight.
The tomato fight has long been into tradition that happens in BIMOL town located in east of spain. It si being held on last wednesday of august since 1945.
There are many theories that explain the initiation of this festival , like once the disgrunted people of a town rioted and attacked the council men with tomatoes for a reason and it was enjoyed so much that it was repeated next year and so on and became a tradition.
Usually the fights last for an hour and within that the whole town square gets coverd with tomato paste.
Celebrating it wildly leads to injuries…so some rules have been made out by the council.
The city council follows a short list of instructions for the safety of the participants and the festival:-
*The tomatoes have to be squashed before throwing to avoid injuries.
*No other projectiles except tomatoes are allowed.
*Participants have to make way for trucks and lorries.
*After the second shot indicative of ending the tomato hurl, no tomatoes are to be thrown.
Then fire trucks are used for the cleansing purpose of the locals as well as the streets. And due to this all the stone streets of the city gets cleaned as the acidity of the tomato act as an disinfectant.
LA TOMATINA has inspirerd many other parts of th e world ….have a look.
1. in 1982 the town of TWIN LAKES, COLORADO held a tomato fight called “colorado texas tomato water”.
2. in 2004 a colombian town made a similar event in june when a surplus amoubt of tomatoes are harvested.
3. the city of RINO,NEVADA,U.S also has an annual hour longtomato fight and gave full credit to the original spanish festival
4.The govt in indian state KARNATAKA banned the hosting of such festival in Bangalore and in Mysore when one of the private organizers tried to organize one saying “In the name of ‘La Tomatina’ festival, permission should not be granted to waste tomatoes”.
And then a similar event was planned in DELHI but was cancelled after recieving some negative response from the public itself i.e wastage.
